We are looking for an exceptional Senior Manager – Mechanical Handling to lead the development, delivery and governance of Mechanical Handling systems within a highly regulated, safety-critical engineering environment.
This is a rare opportunity to influence the technical direction of a major engineering programme while leading talented multidisciplinary teams responsible for delivering world-class engineering solutions from concept through to operation.
About the Role
Reporting to the Chief Design Engineer – Installations, you will provide strategic leadership across the Mechanical Handling function, taking ownership of technical excellence, programme delivery and capability development.
You’ll build and lead a growing engineering team, establish engineering standards, and ensure the successful delivery of safe, robust and commercially viable solutions throughout the product lifecycle.
This role offers genuine influence, allowing you to shape engineering strategy while developing the people, processes and supply chain needed to support future programme growth.
Key Responsibilities
You’ll be responsible for:
- Leading the development and delivery of Mechanical Handling systems from concept through to operation and maintenance.
- Providing technical leadership and engineering governance across complex safety-critical equipment.
- Building, mentoring and developing a high-performing engineering team.
- Acting as the technical authority for Mechanical Handling solutions.
- Delivering programmes to agreed cost, schedule, quality and safety targets.
- Overseeing engineering verification, validation, design assurance and safety substantiation.
- Driving continuous improvement across engineering capability, supplier development and manufacturing readiness.
- Working collaboratively with engineering, manufacturing, procurement, programme management and supply chain teams.
- Supporting customer requirements and future deployment activities across multiple locations.
About You
You’ll be an experienced engineering leader who enjoys solving complex technical challenges while developing people and building capability.
Essential Requirements
✔ Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering (or related discipline)
✔ Chartered Engineer (or equivalent professional registration)
✔ Extensive experience delivering Mechanical Handling equipment or comparable safety-critical systems.
✔ Strong background within nuclear or another highly regulated industry such as:
- Defence
- Aerospace
- Rail
- Oil & Gas
- Power Generation
- Marine
- Heavy Engineering
✔ Proven experience leading large multidisciplinary engineering teams.
✔ Excellent knowledge of:
- Engineering governance
- Design integration
- Product lifecycle management
- Verification & Validation (V&V)
- Safety substantiation
- Manufacturing delivery
✔ Experience managing significant engineering budgets, resources and programme risks.
✔ Strong stakeholder management and leadership skills.
